Both. We start with shears and clippers to remove most of the hair, then use a foil shaver or, where safe, a traditional straight razor (ustra) for a clean finish. If your family prefers a razor or clippers, tell us when you request the service.
Why we use more than one tool
Mundan, also called Chudakarana, is a traditional first haircut. It needs care and good hygiene, and in the U.S. it has to follow professional barbering standards and state board regulations. That is why a Mundan is rarely done with one tool. Each one has a job.
- Shears reduce the length first so nothing pulls.
- Clippers and trimmers remove the bulk of the hair in a controlled, even way.
- A foil shaver takes off the fine hair left behind for a smooth finish.
- A straight razor (ustra), where applicable and safe, is used for a traditional clean shave, done carefully.
Can we ask for a traditional ustra?
Yes, you can ask. Many families prefer a traditional razor shave, and others prefer clippers. Your barber uses professional tools, clipper or razor, depending on your preference and tradition, and always within hygiene and safety standards. Tell us which you prefer when you request the service.
What we apply before and after
A gentle lather or shaving gel reduces friction and protects the skin. After the shave, a mild oil such as coconut oil or a soothing product calms the scalp. Parents can also bring traditional mixtures such as turmeric or sandalwood paste.
Aftercare at home
- Keep the scalp clean and dry.
- Wash with soap and water.
- After that, use a mild baby shampoo.
- Avoid rubbing or scratching the scalp.
How long does it take?
A Mundan usually takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the child's comfort and cooperation. We always work at the child's pace.
