When is Aqiqah done?

  • The seventh day after birth is the traditional time, following the Sunnah.
  • The 14th or 21st day, or any later day that suits your family, if the seventh day is not possible.
  • Before the seventh day: some scholars permit it when it is more convenient. Following the traditional timing is generally encouraged.
  • Later in life: there is no strict deadline, so families can perform Aqiqah when they are able.

Boys and girls

Yes, girls have Aqiqah too. It is a recommended Sunnah for every newborn. Traditionally one sheep or goat is offered for a girl and two for a boy, and the baby's head is shaved. We welcome babies of all genders.

The hair

  • Shaving the head is a recommended practice, not an obligation. Some families trim instead. Tell us what your family prefers.
  • It is customary to weigh the hair and give the equivalent weight in silver, or its value, as charity.
  • The hair can be buried, in keeping with treating the body with respect.
  • Tell us if you want the hair collected for you.
