A taper is not the same as a low fade, though they share similarities in creating a gradual transition from longer to shorter hair. A taper typically involves the hair getting shorter around the sides and back, but it does not necessarily reach the skin, maintaining some length near the neckline and ears. This results in a more subtle and conservative look. On the other hand, a low fade starts very close to the skin at the bottom and gradually increases in length as it moves up the head, with the shortest section beginning just above the ears. While both styles offer a clean and polished appearance, a taper retains more length at the bottom, whereas a low fade has a more dramatic and noticeable contrast.
