The Mundan (tonsure) ceremony is a meaningful milestone in Hindu tradition, symbolizing renewal and growth. While traditionally performed in a religious setting, many families now choose to have this ceremony done at a professional barbershop or in the comfort of their home.
With the right preparation, the experience can be calm, safe, and positive for both the child and the parents.
A well-prepared child leads to a smoother Mundan experience.
Ensure your child is well-rested and fed before the appointment
Avoid scheduling during nap times or when the child is tired
Make sure basic needs are met (diaper change, comfort, etc.)
Bring familiar items such as a favorite toy, blanket, or snacks
Stay calm and reassuring—children respond to your energy
Tip: A relaxed child significantly improves the overall experience.
At-home Mundan allows the child to remain in a familiar environment, which can be very helpful.
Prepare your space:
Choose a clean, quiet, and well-lit area
Expect hair to fall—use a space that is easy to clean
Have your child sit comfortably or be held by a parent
What to have ready:
2–3 clean towels (for hair and cleanup)
Water, wipes, or tissues if needed
Comfortable clothing for both child and parent
Important tips:
Keep the setup simple and uncluttered
Be ready to adjust the child’s position during the service
Your barber will typically arrive within the scheduled time window, so planning ahead helps the process run smoothly
Tip: A prepared space ensures a more organized and stress-free experience.
If you are visiting our shop, here’s what to expect:

We are a professional barbershop focused on hygiene and skill
We do not provide shared toys or TVs due to sanitation standards
Our space is clean, calm, and distraction-free by design
👉 Parents are encouraged to bring their child’s own toys, snacks, or comfort items
During the service:
Parents are encouraged to hold and comfort the child
Parents must stay calm, we have the experience let barber handle that.
Our barbers follow a patient, step-by-step approach
We work at the child’s pace to ensure comfort and safety
During the ceremony, the barber will carefully shave the child’s hair using professional tools (clipper or razor, depending on preference and tradition).
The process is performed gently and systematically
Some families may request leaving a small tuft (shendi), based on tradition
Children may move or become fussy—this is normal
At Dandies, our barbers are experienced with children of all ages and are trained to handle the process with patience, care, and precision, ensuring a smoother experience for both the child and the parents.
Proper aftercare is important for your child’s comfort and hygiene.
Immediately after:
A mild antiseptic lotion or oil may be applied to soothe the scalp
Parents may also provide traditional mixtures (such as turmeric or sandalwood paste) if preferred
At home:
Keep the scalp clean and dry
Avoid washing for the first 24 hours
After that, use a mild baby shampoo
Avoid rubbing or scratching the scalp
👉 Gentle care helps prevent irritation and supports healing.
